My name is Salmaan and I am an F1 Doctor working in London, recently graduating from the Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia (Medicine, MBBS). I also hold a first-class honours degree in BSc Sports Medicine from the University College London (UCL), which I achieved during my intercalation year.
I received 3/3 offers from Norwich Medical School, Hull York Medical School and the University of Southampton during my application cycle. I am also well-versed in the Widening Participation/Foundation Year route of entry as I attended a local state comprehensive.
As someone who has been through the process 8 years ago, I am well-aware as to how challenging it can be! I am passionate about delivering the same outcomes for my students as I managed to achieve for myself during that time, and some of my former mentees are currently studying at medical schools such as UEA, Barts,St. George’s and St. Andrew’s, to name a few. I always aim to offer my students the support and advice I wished someone had given me during my application, and aim to provide a friendly environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions without fear of judgement or looking silly – its always easier working with someone who has been in your shoes!
In my spare time I am an avid sports fan (which has largely been the source of inspiration for my intercalated year in Sports Medicine) and like to unwind by regularly playing football and going to the gym. I also enjoy and keep up to date with cricket and boxing.
Understanding what a student wants out of a lesson and targeting their areas of weaknesses helps ensure they receive the best out of the session. I always aim to build a relaxed, friendly and approachable environment whereby my students can convey what they need help with so that lessons are goal-driven.
I encourage students to suggest particular areas of weakness they want to target. This helps set an agenda and keeps the work student-led. I also firmly believe in the concepts of active recall and spaced repetition, with a fundamental knowledge of past papers being a key to success.
I have tutored prospective medical school applicants with UCAT and interview prep for the past 3 years. My former students now study at a number of prestigious medical schools across the country, with my some of my most recent tutees achieving admission into universities such as Barts and the London (QMUL), Newcastle, St. Andrews and Nottingham, in addition to three students in my 2020/21 cohort receiving offers for Norwich/UEA.
I have tutored GCSE Biology and Chemistry for the last 2/3 years, assisting these students in gaining admission into competitive, selective sixth forms. I also have experience in preparing children for the 11+ examination.
Receiving 3/3 offers to study Medicine was the culmination of a lot of personal hard-work and sacrifice, and has enabled me to be in the position I am today! I was also one of the few candidates short-listed for an early offer by Hull York Medical School due to an exceptional performance at interview.
Having been passionate about sport since a young age – combining my academic pursuits in Medicine in conjunction with a lifelong hobby through gaining admission for Sports Medicine as an external applicant into the highly-selective UCL Medical School during my intercalated year, and subsequently achieving first-class honours, is also something I am particularly proud of.
