Hi, I’m Karina (Kari) and I’m currently a final year dental student at Cardiff University. I would like to help you get to where I am, as being a dental student has been one of the most wonderful experiences in my life.
I still remember very well how stressful the application process can be – from the UCAT exam to personal statement or interviews. That’s why I want to share my own experience with you, give you valuable tips and show you common mistakes, as all of this will help you out.
I’m very organised, outgoing and easy to talk to. Even though dentistry has been my main focus throughout the last few years, I still aim to get involved in as many other projects as possible like volunteering, tutoring or research. On top of this I always make time for my hobbies (gym, yoga, food) as that helps me clear my head and relax.
My key advice to any prospective dental student is to be positive! Work hard, give it all you got, believe in yourself and you will make it happen ๐ Be friendly, confident and approachable as those are qualities universities would be looking for.
I always try and adapt my teaching style to my students’ current understanding and knowledge. This means that if you have no experience so far, we might go a bit slower through the material in the beginning and I might be talking and explaining a bit more. I would always make sure you understand the topic before we move forwards. However, if you’ve already done some practice we will just build on what you already know. This includes identifying both your weak spots so we can improve them as well as your strengths. This would help us develop a strategy for the UCAT exam /interview that is designed specifically for you because it takes into consideration your own strengths and weaknesses. Finally, I aim to make my lessons engaging and interactive – it’s a safe and open space where you can ask anything (there is no such thing as ”stupid” questions!!).
I have been tutoring for more than 4 years now. Before I got involved with Medic Mind, I was doing interview preparation with prospective dental and medical students.
In terms of academics there are many moments I am extremely proud of such as being in the Top 3 students from the whole country on my A-levels equivalent exams back home in Bulgaria, getting offers from 3 out of 4 universities and performing very well on my course currently.
However, probably what I am actually most proud of is learning to have a balanced life that includes university, work, sport and hobbies as well as maintaining a positive mentality thougout all this.
