Hi. My name is Joel Stoy and I am a third year medical student at Imperial College London. I am originally from Southampton and have recently moved to London. Medicine intrigued me after having a wonderful opportunity to look after my grandmother during the summer holidays after my GCSE’s. Through lots of volunteering during the pandemic and being able to shadow a cardiologist, I chose to do medicine. I like to box and play five a side football during my free time as I strongly believe it is important to have a good work life balance. I have always been interested in research and I demonstrated my strong academia skills when completing an EPQ on pharmacogenomics in cystic fibrosis. This helped strengthen my ideas on writing a dissertation and the importance of being able to report about it.
I have a very engaging teaching style. I understand that there is always different ways of reaching a destination and I try to apply this to my teaching. I believe there are many students with different needs and teaching requirements, hence I am enthusiastic and eager to help them reach their end goal. I am a great listener and observer so I fervently believe I will be able to bring the best out of my students.
Previously, I have taught Year 13 students A level Biology and Maths during my free time. This has honed my skills as a tutor, as having been in the same situation I was able to provide help when needed.
I would say the proudest moment was being accepted into Imperial College London to study medicine. Studying medicine has been a long-standing ambition of mine, and hence getting into such a prestigious institution has definitely been by proudest achievement.
