I’m Shreyaa, a third year medical student at the University of Southampton! I am very passionate about helping aspiring medics and have been a widening participation mentor for the past 3 years (and have successfully helped 4 students through the medicine application process, from personal statements through to interviews and A Levels).
I have completed A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology, as well as an EPQ. At University, I am currently the Vice President of our Medicine Society and work closely with our Widening Access to Medicine Society, along with the admissions team (I have helped out in Southampton interview and presented at offer holder days), therefore have experience working with students during the application process, and am confident in doing so. I have also been invited to sixth forms for talks about my experience with the application process, and life as a medical student. I have also led mock interview workshops for local schools and sixth forms.
As someone who received 3 offers in my first application cycle, I am eager to share my advice and help others in their applications too.
I like to go through questions to understand topics. I would go through mock questions with the student, and allow them to make any mistakes in a safe environment, as this is the best way to learn, and go through the answers while simultaneously looking at the topic, including study skills and tips that helped me/ others (e.g. go through an abstract reasoning question style, talk through the student’s process, discuss how to achieve the right answer, go through tips for the subject, and find similar/ other questions depending on how much help the student needs on the topic).
I have worked as a widening participation mentor for 3 years, assisting students through the medicine application process, from UCAT/ personal statements through to deciding unis, the UCAS application, interviews and A Levels. I have also tutored 11+ students for 2+ years and have ran revision sessions for GCSE Biology and Chemistry. I have also run multiple revision sessions for medical students at Southampton.
I was elected as Vice President for our Medical Society in Southampton through a faculty-wide vote, where all students and staff voted. I am also very passionate about inspiring young people and have worked with widening access teams as well as sixth form schools about my experiences with the application process, difficulties I faced and how I have overcome them. I am actively involved in medical research alongside my studies and have been selected for multiple conferences to present my research. My primary interest areas include service improvement and medical education studies.
