Hi, my name is Julian, I am a former RVC Graduate (BVetMed Honours, 2022 Betuel Prize Holder) and am currently working as a small animal veterinary surgeon at Vets4Pets Letchworth.
I remember my experience applying for vet school as stressful and filled with uncertainty. Before vet school, I attended public schools with less stellar reputations, had mediocre grades and honestly, nothing much to boast about. I was an inch from giving up entirely when my university admissions officer told me to save my time and money from applying to veterinary school as she thought my chances seemed close to hopeless (yikes).
In a fit of rebellion, I applied to UK veterinary schools anyways and fortunately, I was offered a place in Glasgow university and the Royal Veterinary College. Looking back, I believe that it was my performance during the university interviews which compensated for where my academic grades lacked, getting me into vet school.
Fast forward to today, I have now graduated from the RVC (with honours), been awarded the Betuel Prize for being First Place over all years in the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine Degree program at RVC, and starting my dream job as a small animal veterinary surgeon at the practice of my choice.
Although it required lots of blood, sweat and tears, my experience proved to me that:
1. Although academic grades are important to an extent, universities (and the real working world) favours experience, personality and soft skills even more. (Unfortunately, many students struggle to demonstrate these to their assessors which could easily tip their decision away from you! It truly is such a shame!)
2. Your past performance does not always serve as a true indicator of your future.
3. And more importantly, that anybody can achieve their academic goals with the right guidance, approach, mindset and technique.
My goal as your tutor is to help YOU gain confidence (through practice and exposure) and help YOU demonstrate your fullest potential in a succinct and eloquent manner in order to maximize your chances of getting into veterinary school. Remember that the interview is YOUR platform to show the assessors your BEST self. Do not short-change yourself by underestimating the importance of content, structure and delivery of your answers.
It certainly was a huge privilege for me to pursue a degree that I was passionate about and something which I hope everybody can enjoy. Hence, my ambition has always been to pass on all my knowledge and experience to help aspiring vet students enjoy the same journey that I had, inspire people to look past their failures, and find their confidence to pursue their biggest goals. It would be my pleasure to be a part of your exciting learning journey ahead.
Aside from work, I enjoy breakdancing, reading and watching movies. My current aspirations are to rescue a shelter cat and own a small home with my girlfriend.
I believe in tutoring that is tailored to the individual. Firstly, I would like to get to know you so that I can have a firm grasp on where your biggest concerns are and also, where your confidences are so that we can capitalise on them and use it to help your weaknesses.
I also believe in an interactive style of teaching. Instead of teaching you a boring, set approach on how to tackle the interviews, we will engage in interactive forms of learning such as role-playing, brainstorming, and applying different approaches in practice to find what works best for you.
Lastly, I believe that ‘Practice makes Perfect’ is important in terms of building confidence and finding your best approach. So, I would like to try to get students to apply new concepts into practice and role-play interviews as much as possible.
I have given over 25 hours of veterinary interview and personal statement writing on this platform. I have helped my students gain offers in the Veterinary Medicine degree program from various universities such as the Royal Veterinary College, University of Liverpool and Harper-and-Keele.
