Hi! Iโm Lucy, a first year dental student at the University of Liverpool. To align with my interests in biological sciences, I chose to study ALevels in Biology and Chemistry. I found quite a few concepts in Chemistry initially challenging, meaning I had to develop new methods to break down topics in a way that I understood. My third choice was Geography, a subject that has helped me understand the complex relationships of people, places and the environment. After being stuck in Budapest Airport on the morning of results day (and getting back just in time!), I opened my envelope to A*A*A, so this is your sign you can do it too!
Applying to dental school is tough, but I think it really helps to know someone thatโs been through the process recently, and so can give up-to-date advice. Completing interview preparation courses during my own application, and now becoming a dental student I have a strong understanding of what dental schools seek.
I focus on understanding the challenges that my students face when it comes to learning. I use strong communication skills to teach knowledge, technique and develop confidence. I appreciate we donโt always get it right first time, I bring compassion and support to encourage progression. Let me help you through the hurdles I know getting to university brings!
As a student who sat in Chemistry watching scribbles dance around on the board, I had to come up with my own way of grasping concepts. This is reflected in my teaching style where I carefully break down problems, but glue them back together in a way that’s not only understood, but sticks too. I am an adaptable teacher, and use a range of visual aids, mnemonics, and real world examples to suit the learning style of each student. My teaching environment is warm and encouraging, with questions always welcome – as this builds knowledge and confidence in my students.
After each lesson I provide written feedback highlighting key areas to revisit, as well as any other resource suggestions.
I have supported secondary school students across a variety of GCSE subjects, notably English. I also have experience in tutoring students with learning challenges/difficulties.
During Sixth Form I was a joint leader of the Medical Society and helped other applicants with MMI & Panel interview preparation.
It has to be getting into dental school, or perhaps the โAโ in Chemistry (trust me I know the struggle!). However, away from textbooks, I am an Officer Cadet and a nationally ranked ski racer.
