Hi! My name is Azimah and I am a graduate student currently studying at Leicester Medical School. My first degree was in Biomedical Science at the University of Manchester. Studying medicine has been my dream since I was a child. I was rejected from medical school twice before I finally got in the third time, after completing another degree. The road I took to get into medical school was a long and difficult one. Therefore, I want to help make it easier for prospective medical students to achieve their dreams. I understand how long and daunting the application process to medical school is. My experience has taught me what not to do when writing a personal statement and when getting interviewed. There is definitely no “fixed formula”, but I do have lots of great tips that I could share with other students.
I am also an international student. The universities in the UK have very limited places for international students so I understand the added anxiety when applying for medical school. I hope to help other international students get into medical school too.
My teaching style is more interactive or activity-based. When it comes to interview practice, I would coach students by running several mock interviews and giving feedback of what went right and what went wrong.
When teaching Maths, I would usually start off by explaining the concepts of the topic, then I would explain the rationale by working through an example with the student. Once I feel like the student has understood the concept, I would do some exam style questions with the student, encouraging the student to help them get to the answer. This helps reinforce their understanding of the concepts and build critical thinking skills. I use a very similar method when teaching Biology and Chemistry, talking through the exam questions and signposting them to help them get to the correct answer. For these subjects, using this method also helps reinforce their memory on the concepts.
I have tutored prospective medical students in the past by running mock MMIs and providing feedback. I also have experience tutoring students for their GCSE and A level exams. Finally, in university, I have taken part in peer tutoring schemes where I tutor first year medical students online and in dissecting rooms.
My proudest achievement would be finally getting into medical school. Being awarded a merit for my performance in year 1 of medical school would be my second proudest achievement.
